Calvert County Seeks to Recognize Those Who Preserve Local History

The Calvert County Department of Planning & Zoning is accepting nominations for the 29th Annual Calvert County Historic Preservation Awards.

Have you noticed an old house being restored as you drive around the county?  Does someone in your community record its history or the stories and memories of its long-time residents?  Now is the time to make sure that people who have worked to preserve Calvert County’s heritage and historic properties get recognized. There are three categories of awards to recognize outstanding contributions to the preservation of Calvert County heritage: project, service and preservation education awards.

Many people and projects have received Historic Preservation Awards over the last 28 years including: Osprey Property Company for archaeology at Chapline Place; the American Chestnut Land Trust for restoration of a historic cemetery; and Jeff Cunningham, Branson Wray and Rick Weber for public education exemplified by the archaeology class at Huntingtown High School. Samples of other awards include: Paul Berry for decades of devotion to research and action to preserve Calvert County heritage; the St. Leonard Vision Group for the book, St. Leonard: A Maryland Tidewater Community; Prince George’s Federal Savings Bank for adaptive reuse of Bowen’s Garage in Huntingtown; and many others.

Projects eligible for recognition this year must have been completed by Jan. 1, 2018. Nomination forms are available at the Department of Planning & Zoning in the County Services Plaza, the Calvert County Historical Society and the Calvert County public libraries.

You may also download forms from the Calvert County website at the link provided below. Nominations forms must be submitted no later than Friday, April 27, 2018.
