2018 Dunkirk Water Treatment Project a Success

To improve water quality in the Dunkirk neighborhood of Cavalier Country, the Calvert County Department of Public Works, Water and Sewerage Division and several contractors completed a $325,000 water treatment project for two wells serving the community in July 2018.

The Cavalier Country wells draw groundwater that had elevated levels of naturally occurring iron and total organic carbon (TOC), which comes from decaying natural organic matter. Iron and TOC have no health effects, though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists iron as a “secondary contaminant” that can affect the color and taste of water. The water supply is processed through the new filtration system to remove iron.

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners approved funding for the Cavalier Country treatment system in fiscal year 2017. Following the two-year project the water system now meets EPA standards for iron content.
