    Mercury in Maryland: A Local or Global Problem? Presented by Dr. Andrew Heyes Did you know that because of high concentrations of mercury, many fish from all of Maryland’s lakes come with advisories limiting their consumption by humans? It’s true! But how does mercury get into our fish, and can citizens of Calvert County help solve the problem locally? In this seminar, Dr. Heyes will explain the sources and severity of mercury contamination in Maryland’s fish and will discuss whether action within Maryland can alleviate this problem or if it is a global concern.

  5. Art Exhibit: “Some Things Old, Some Things New”

    October 9, 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM @ Ruddy Duck Brewery & Grill

    The Ruddy Duck Brewery and Grill is proud to announce our first annual DuckFest on Sunday, October 9th from 1pm to 6pm. DuckFest is a Fundraising event based on the German celebration of Oktoberfest, complete with live music, craft beer from various Calvert County breweries, authentic scratch made German cuisine and a variety of children and adult games and activities. DuckFest is a family friendly event with plenty of fun for young and experienced (you’re not old) alike!! The Ruddy Duck Brewery and Grill and our sister operations Canards Catering, Ruddy Duck Seafood and Alehouse and Cone Island Ice Cream, have a long history of supporting the community. We have long wanted to host a “major” event combining our love of entertaining with our desire to do good for our community. And so we will with the annual DuckFest! Effective solutions for reducing nitrogen losses from agriculture to water resources exist, so what political and economic impediments to their adoption remain?

    Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Solomons, Maryland, will host their annual trick-or-treating extravaganza, Halloween in the Garden, on Saturday, October 29, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you are looking for a fun family-friendly Halloween activity, this is the place to be! For the 17th year, youngsters and their families are invited to parade down the Garden’s Wooded Path collecting treats and small gifts from more than seventy booths. Each booth is decorated and hosted by a Southern Maryland community organizations or businesses. Admission is $1.00 per person and will benefit the Holiday Food Basket Program and the Annmarie Scholarship Fund. Trick-or-treating bags will be provided for each quest. New this year, purchase a line-hopper pass for $3/person, on sale at the admission gate from 10:30-11:00am, and jump to the front of the trick-or-treating line!
