Summary of Actions Taken
Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Presented a proclamation declaring the week of January 29 – February 4, 2008, as Youth Appreciation Week, showing our faith in the ability of today’s youth as they assume responsible roles in the future of mankind, and recognized 25 seniors from Northern, Huntingtown, and Calvert High Schools.

Presented a certificate and monetary award to Ricca Baker for being chosen as Employee of the Month for December 2007. Ms. Baker was recognized for her initiative in bringing a wide variety of quality programs to the North Beach Senior Center and her continual willingness to go above and beyond in serving our senior citizens.

Presented certificates for the Team Excellence Award, recognizing employees from the Department of Economic Development and Technology Services for their successful coordination and execution of the 2007 Governor’s Tourism Conference held in Solomons. This event drew over 300 participants and effectively showcased Calvert County as a noteworthy travel destination. Those individuals are:  Sandy Bentley, Danita Boonchaisri, Ruthie Buckler, Tammy Loveless, Paul Lipp, Kelly Robertson-Slagle, Wendy Rawlings, Erica Stone, and Pat Wallace.

Approved the agreement between the Board of County Commissioners and the Property Owners Association of Chesapeake Ranch Estates for a third special taxing district and authorized the President of the Board to sign the agreement.

Discussed a memo requesting a letter of endorsement of legislative changes for the Calvert County Liquor Board with the following action taken:  1) agreed to support the fee structure; 2) agreed to support license renewal protest with removal of letter C, license renewal late penalty, and sale to underage minors; 3) agreed to support a beer, wine, and spirits tasting license (does not impact wineries); 4) agreed that the board members and board chair salaries double and that alternates receive $200 per meeting; and 5) decided not to support the Class B requirement additions, however, would consider looking at it again next year with a change in wording.

Approved the grant applications as presented for the Rural Legacy FY 2009 Grant. Approved the priority of the grant requests, with Calvert Creeks having the priority. Authorized the President of the Board to sign the applications, cover letters, and the letter stating the priority of the grant requests.

Held a work session to discuss the proposed six-year Capital Improvements Plan FY 2009 – 2014, and directed staff to make the modifications as discussed and bring back for further discussion. Directed staff to: 1) follow-up with the State regarding the redesign of the intersection of the Thomas Johnson Bridge off/on ramp in Solomons; 2) bring back a recommendation regarding the Calvert Marine Museums Master Plan Implementation; 3) provide the Board with a copy of the layout of the Mt. Hope Convenience Center proposal; and 4) be sure to include the “wish list” in the next presentation.

Attended a ribbon cutting for Edible Arrangements in Lusby, which is a unique franchise that creates made-to-order fresh fruit bouquets.

Held a joint public hearing with the Planning Commission on the update to the Calvert County Comprehensive Water and Sewer Plan. The Planning Commission agreed to let the record stay open until the close of business on Tuesday, February 12, 2008.
