SUMMARY OF ACTIONS
Appointed D. F. “Bart” Bartholomew Jr. to the Gambling Permit Review Committee. Commissioner Shaw directed staff to send a notice out to the Clergy Council regarding the ongoing vacancy for a member of the clergy.
Awarded the contract for fiber optic tactical equipment for the Sheriff’s Office to Midlantic Security, of Alexandria, Virginia, for the bid amount of $53,195.71.
Held a public hearing and approved a budget adjustment in the amount of $155,400 for the acquisition of 1.8 acres of land adjacent to the planned Health Department facility on Stafford Road.
Awarded the contract for the harvest and removal of timber located on approximately 21.2 acres of the Bennett O. Hughes Memorial Tree Farm, to Ben C. Swarey, of Charlotte Hall, Maryland, for the bid amount of $83,440.45. Commissioner Stinnett directed staff to provide the Board with a copy of the original contract for the Hughes Tree Farm, which is supposed to be open for public use.
Approved the request to submit a grant application to the Maryland Heritage Grant Program for continued funding for the third phase of the restoration project of the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum’s rail car, Dolores, in the amount of $35,000.
Approved the request from the Historic District Commission to submit an application for Federal funding through the Certified Local Government Grant program administered by the Maryland Historical Trust, in order to continue the project documenting farming in Calvert County.
Mr. Brad Gottfried, President, College of Southern Maryland (CSM), gave a presentation on the State of the College and their future capital improvement plans. The Prince Frederick Campus experienced a 3% increase in enrollment from 2006 to 2007 and a 20.3% increase in enrollment in four years. The State of the College is very good, despite concerns about funding, how to keep CSM affordable, and accommodating the demand at Prince Frederick.
Approved the request to submit a Small Watershed Grant proposal to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for up to $175,000 over a two and a half year period to fund environmental outreach and education, water quality sampling in the tidal and non-tidal portions of the watershed, restoration activities, stormwater management retrofits, and installation of nitrogen-removing septic systems.
Approved a budget adjustment in the amount of $90,202 for the County’s Volunteer Fire, Rescue, EMS Departments to cover operational expenses (gasoline and diesel fuel expense) for the service they provide to the citizens of Calvert County. Commissioner Kelley directed staff to provide an analysis of the difference between the increase and the actual budgeted amount by station, indicating where the increase in responses exists.
Approved the counter-execution of the Land Owner Agreement with the Phipps Farm for the Stream Mitigation Project necessary for the construction of the Southern Connector project.
Directed staff to schedule a public hearing for comments prior to the adoption any regulations concerning commercial bingo, schedule a tour of the machines in Chesapeake Beach, make a presentation to the Commissioners showing exactly what the proposed machines are and how they operate, and provide the Board with the formula used for the recommended fees.
Attended the Open House of the Community Resources Building, the newly-renovated former site of the Prince Frederick Library, and received the yearly update from the Maryland Cooperative Extension.
