The Team Excellence award was presented to a number of Calvert County employees who willingly came forward and were instrumental in getting the North Beach Senior Center operational after a fire that broke out on June 3, 2008. These employees, listed below, received framed certificates and Team Excellence shirts acknowledging their tremendous collaboration and organization, which resulted in no interruption of services to our seniors:

Appointed Kimberly L. Mackall to the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of Calvert County.

Reappointed Crystal L. Seay and appointed Mary J. Jenkins and Shelly Wahlgren to the Commission for Women.

Reappointed Alonzo Barber, III, and Nancy Pretto-Simmons to the Economic Development Commission.

Reappointed James S. McComb to the Heritage Committee.

Appointed Reverend Donald Melvin to the Social Services Advisory Board.

Approved the Charitable Gambling Permit applications for the 4th quarter of 2008 as submitted by Arick L. Lore American Legion Post 274 for one event; Beach Buccaneers Youth Club, Inc., for one event; North Beach Volunteer Fire Department for three events; and Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department, Inc., for two events with a date change from October 11th to October 18th.

Denied the Charitable Bingo Permit applications submitted by Appeal Elementary School and Asbury Foundation at Asbury-Solomons Island as the applicants did not provide the required documents.

Denied the Charitable Pull-Tab Permit application submitted by Asbury Foundation at Asbury-Solomons Island as the applicant did not provide the required documents.

Approved and authorized the President of the Board to sign the Grant Modification Form for the Community Service Litter Control/Infrastructure Upgrades Grant designating Deborah A. Nutwell, Calvert County’s new Community Service Coordinator, as the responsible person for the program management of the grant.

Awarded J. E. Wood & Sons Co., Inc., of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, the Detention Center Roof Renovation Project contract for the bid amount of $332,069.

Approved and authorized the President of the Board to sign the contract with William A. Poe for professional services regarding the Wilson Road oral history project, with reimbursement by the Maryland Historical Trust up to $6,000.

Approved and signed the letter of support for the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory’s (CBL) proposed living shoreline project in front of the bulkhead at the CBL.

Denied the rezoning request submitted by Michael Havenner for Carriage Crossing LLC. Directed staff to prepare a findings of fact, conclusions of law and order based on the record that supports the action taken by the Board. Commissioner Shaw directed staff to send a letter to the State Highway Administration requesting their assistance with the Huntingtown Transportation Plan in order to complete the Huntingtown Master Plan.

Held a luncheon with the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce and gave an update on various County projects/issues.

A presentation was given by Carroll Buracker & Associates on the comprehensive master plan of the Calvert County Fire-Rescue-EMS service. Directed staff to bring back recommendations for implementation of this plan.

Attended the Grand Opening of the Calvert Marine Museum’s new exhibit, Eco-Invaders, An Invasive Species Exhibit.
