Summary of Action Taken
Tuesday, October 3, 2006

Senator Bernie Fowler and Sherrod Sturrock, Deputy Director, Calvert Marine Museum, gave a brief presentation on the upcoming Patuxent River Appreciation Days (PRAD) at the Calvert Marine Museum, beginning on Friday, October 6, with the “State of the River Summit” and concluding on Sunday, October 8, with the PRAD Parade.

Presented a proclamation declaring October 18 - 14, 2006, as “Fire Prevention Week,” urging all citizens to heed the important safety messages of “Fire Prevention Week” and to support the volunteers in their efforts.

Presented proclamations to the following citizens who have volunteered 50+ years of service in the Calvert County Volunteer Fire/Rescue/EMS Departments:

  • Herbert C. Dowell Jr., North Beach Volunteer Fire Department, March 1954
  • Richard Wayne Gordy, North Beach Volunteer Fire Department, April 1951
  • Vernon D. Horsmon Sr., Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, June 1943
  • J. Raymond Lankford, Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department, May 1956

Appointed Carl P. Osgood Sr. to the Calvert Housing Opportunities Committee.

Appointed Eunice Washington to the Housing Authority of Calvert County.

Authorized staff to proceed into a public hearing to formally take action on a budget adjustment to fund $7.8 million for the following projects:

         Prince Frederick Aquatic Center land ................ $2.7 million
         Southern Connector Road Project...................... $3.0 million
         Kindergarten Expansion Initiative........................ $2.1 million

Approved Budget Adjustment 135 in the amount of $23,858 from the Capital Contingency Fund for the purchase of two parcels of excess property located in Lusby from the State Highway Administration.

Authorized staff to proceed into a public hearing for the addition of a deputy position for the Sheriff’s Office in order to accommodate the request for one additional deputy to be assigned to the Town of Chesapeake Beach. The cost of the County hiring an additional deputy is $117,140, and will be paid in full by the Town of Chesapeake Beach.

Approved Budget Adjustment 127 in the amount of $8,275 from the Capital Contingency Fund to cover the replacement of the items stolen from Flag Ponds Nature Park (John Deere gator, generator, weed eater/brush cutter, and chainsaw).
