BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
Summary of Actions Taken
Tuesday, January 23, 2007
Appointed Denise Cherry to the Calvert County Heritage Committee.
Re-appointed C. Douglass Alves Jr., Eugene A. Gullickson, Wayne M. Rogers, and Margaret T. VanAuker and appointed William A. Nagel and Linda Seymour to the Cove Point Light Station Commission.
Appointed Pamela C. Meador to the Prince Frederick Architectural Review Committee. Directed staff to look at the criteria for all Calvert County architectural review committees when looking at Town Center Master Plan re-writes.
A presentation was given on the State of the College by Dr. Bradley Gottfried, President, College of Southern Maryland (CSM). Since 2000, enrollment has increased by approximately 5,000, with the Prince Frederick Campus being the fastest growing campus. Requested that the Board of County Commissioners be provided with a copy of the Master Plan for the Prince Frederick Campus. CSM requested a letter of intent to provide local share of funds for the Prince Frederick Campus Phase II. The Board explained that this needs to go through the County’s Capital Improvement Plan process, and are not certain if the funds will be available in FY 2008. The Board also stated that the intent is to fund the project if the State funds 75% of the project.
Authorized staff to sponsor a fourth annual “Pump for the Bay” contest, expending $250 of the Environmental Commission’s budget to pay for a septic system pump-out for the winner, as well as solicit local businesses for donations. The Board also authorized staff to participate in the Patuxent River Appreciation Days 2007, promoting the importance of maintenance of septic systems in Calvert County.
Awarded Newsom Seed, Inc., of Fulton, Maryland, the Grass Seed Blend for Athletic Fields contract for the bid amount of $36,600.
Approved the proposal submitted by Smolen, Emr and Associates in the amount of $902,640 for the infrastructure, parking, and facility design of the indoor aquatic center in Prince Frederick. Directed staff to come back to the Board with a new design and rendering plan without the silo. Staff is requested to inform the Board as to who on staff or committee will be responsible to oversee the day-to-day management of this project as construction moves forward.
Approved a funding request from Charles County for Angel’s Watch Shelter; however, only funding up to 7% ($3,500), which is equivalent to Calvert County’s usage in FY 2006. This is also contingent upon Charles and St. Mary’s Counties contributing their usage percentage as well. Directed staff to research and report back to the Board as to how many Charles County residents are using Calvert County shelters.
Attended a groundbreaking at Annmarie Garden for their new Gallery Building. Presented Annmarie Garden with a check of $500,000 for this project.
