Calvert Honors Its Most Beautiful People

Thirty of Calvert County’s outstanding volunteers were honored Sept. 22, 2015, at the annual Calvert You Are Beautiful ceremony. Dorothy "Dotty" Greene was named Volunteer of the Year for her volunteer efforts for a number of local organizations.

The Calvert You Are Beautiful nominees included volunteers who help organizations like the Calvert Nature Society, Meals on Wheels, the Calvert County Senior Centers, the One Room Schoolhouse, the volunteer fire and rescue departments and others. Dorothy Williams Greene has had a long and successful career with a total of 28 years of supporting the learning and growth of youth. She is truly a wonderful ambassador for Calvert County, always willing to promote the history and activities that are an important part of the county’s heritage. She shares her love of Calvert County in all the organizations and functions she participates in. Examples include:

• The Calvert County Fair Board; she has been a member since 1986 and is currently director and vice president. She is co-chair of Youth Day at the Fair which she helped start 27 years ago.

• The School #7 One-Room School Committee; she helps design and lead 4th grade field trip activities for the Port Republic landmark.

• The Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, with membership dating to 1977.

• The Calvert Retired School Personnel Association; she is currently treasurer and has served in many positions since 1995.

• The Board of Directors for the Saint Leonard Vision Group; she is on the Spirit Committee in charge of egg hunts and caroling at the St. Leonard Polling House.

• The Calvert County 4-H All Stars; she organizes the bake sale fundraiser held at Calvert County courthouse every other year.

• Christ Church in Port Republic, where she has been a member since birth.

After spending her career as a teacher in Montgomery, Prince George’s and Calvert counties, Dotty often sees her former students and everyone remembers her fondly.

Described as a thoughtful, kind and generous person, Dotty has a love for Calvert County. Her ambassadorship through her many activities makes her a worthy recipient of the "Calvert You Are Beautiful" award.
