Meet Commissioner Tom Hejl
Tom Hejl was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 2014,as an At-Large Representative. He currently serves as Board Vice President.
Commissioner Hejl has more than 40 years of experience in public service. He began his career with the Maryland State Police in 1971. During his tenure, Lieutenant Hejl spent 12 years assigned in Calvert County where he was the first resident trooper, a criminal investigator and supervisor. He filled a number of other roles during his 25-year career, including command positions within the Bureau of Drug Enforcement.
Following retirement, Commissioner Hejl became the chief operating officer of Blackhawk Investigations. He left Blackhawk Investigations to accept a position as an investigator with the State’s Attorney’s Office in Calvert County and remained in that position until November of 2002 when he accepted the position of assistant sheriff at the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office. Lt. Colonel Hejl retired from his position as assistant sheriff in April of 2013.
Commissioner Hejl has been a board member of the United Way of Calvert County for seven years and is currently the board chair.

Commissioner Hejl grew up in Baltimore and graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1971. He began his law enforcement career immediately upon graduation. He has college credits from Catonsville Community College and the University of Maryland.
Commissioner Hejl was assigned to Prince Frederick Barrack of the Maryland State Police immediately upon his graduation from the academy. Once assigned to Calvert County, he made it his home and never left. He is married to Sheila, has two step-daughters and four grandchildren.
