Cable Franchise: What Is Covered

The franchise agreement covers the provision of local cable television service only. The areas in the county receiving service are determined by what’s called the density requirement. In Calvert County, cable television service must be extended to residential dwelling units where the minimum density is at least 15 homes per mile. For comparison, Charles and St. Mary’s counties have a density requirement of 20 homes per mile.

A concern among some residents is the local availability of internet service. However, under federal and state law, Calvert County cannot regulate broadband service, internet service or telephone service. The county understands that broadband service availability is an important issue for residents. Since cable television providers typically include internet access in their services, the county is interested in developing as broad a cable service footprint as is reasonable and economically feasible.
