What is the #PatuxentChallenge?
The #PatuxentChallenge is a fun way for families and individuals to explore the Patuxent River. Activities include hiking, kayaking, fishing, historic sites, and picnicking
When: Throughout 2019
Where: Seven counties, and the city of Laurel that make up the Patuxent Watershed challenge the public to engage in activities to explore, learn about, and enjoy the Patuxent River.
  • Download the #PatuxentChallenge brochure and map (coming soon)
  • Choose an activity from the list.
  • When you arrive at the site, look for the #PatuxentChallenge sign.
  • After completing this specific challenge, take a selfie with the #PatuxentChallenge sign
  • Post your photo to your preferred social media site, along with the hashtag #PatuxentChallenge. In your post, tag your friends, and tell everyone what happened during your adventure. Share other photos from the day along with the hashtag #PatuxentChallenge
  • You can win prizes! Complete at least one event in each county and the City of Laurel (eight events) and email your photos to . Include your name and address so we can mail your goody bag! Notes: One prize pack will be awarded per address. Prize packs will be mailed after December 31, 2019.

Paddle @ Kings Landing Park (Activity #10)
3255 Kings Landing Road, Huntingtown MD 20639 SIGN LOCATION: Fishing Pier
Bring your own canoe, kayak, or standup paddleboard to explore the middle Patuxent and this brackish water estuary. Canoe/kayak/paddleboard rentals may be available in 2018, call for more information. There is no admission fee. Park is open daily 9:00AM to 8:00PM Memorial Day to Labor Day; 9:00AM to 5:00PM Labor Day to Memorial Day. 410-535-2661 

Hike @ Jefferson Patterson Park And Museum (Activity #12)
10515 Mackall Road, St. Leonard, MD 20685 SIGN LOCATION: Along Village Trail
This ADA-accessible trail begins across from the Pavilion and takes visitors to the replica Indian Village. Along the way, interpretive signs talk about the changes in the environment and landscape in the past 400 years, as well as the Eastern Woodland Indian culture of past, present, and future. Open all year from 7:30AM until dusk except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. 410-586-8501 (external link)

Paddle @ Lower Marlboro Wharf (Activity #15)
3955 Lower Marlboro Road, Owings MD 20736 SIGN LOCATION: Wharf.
Bring your own canoe, kayak, or standup paddleboard to explore the middle Patuxent and this brackish water estuary; launch is from a floating dock on the Patuxent. Limited parking, no facilities, no admission fee. Park is open daily, dawn to dusk. 410-535-5327
