Department Overview

The Department of General Services provides cultural, recreational and educational opportunities for all citizens through the Parks and Recreation Division, Natural Resources Division, the Calvert Marine Museum and the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum. In addition, the department provides capital project management and inspection, performs professional facility maintenance through the Buildings and Grounds Division, oversees the management of all county facilities, provides pest abatement and mosquito control and implements the Johnson grass program.

The Department of General Services strives to provide safe, clean, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly county-owned facilities for staff and for all citizens to pursue their recreational and cultural activities.

  • Buildings and Grounds
    • Buildings and Grounds is responsible for the custodial care, buildings and grounds maintenance including noxious weed for active farms and repair and renovation of county-owned and leased facilities. The division provides these services to all county departments, county libraries, the Sheriff’s Office, court systems, community centers, etc. with its staff and contractors.
  • Calvert Marine Museum
    • The museum collects, preserves, researches and interprets the cultural and natural history of Southern Maryland for the public. It is dedicated to the presentation of its three themes: regional paleontology, estuarine life of the tidal Patuxent River and adjacent Chesapeake Bay, and maritime history of these waters.
  • Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum
    • This museum collects, preserves, interprets and exhibits objects and information relating to the history of the Chesapeake Beach Railway, the towns and resorts of Chesapeake Beach and North Beach.
  • Mosquito Control
    • Calvert County Mosquito Control provides countywide integrated pest abatement of nuisance and vector (disease carrier) mosquitoes. The Mosquito Control Program is totally committed to an integrated approach that includes physical, biological and chemical control options to reduce the mosquito population throughout Calvert County.
  • Natural Resources 
    • This division preserves, manages and operates natural resource areas to provide compatible outdoor recreation and educational opportunities for the public. The Division of Natural Resources manages the following areas/sites: Flag Ponds Nature Park, King’s Landing Park, Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary, Hughes Memorial Tree Farm, Hutchins’ Fishing Pond and Biscoe Gray Reserve.
  • Parks and Recreation
    • The division provides opportunities for healthful, enjoyable, lifetime leisure activities to the entire community through a comprehensive program of recreational activities in the community centers, the public schools and the county parks. The division is also responsible for the management, maintenance and development of the county's active recreation parks.
