Electrical Contractor Guidelines
  • All electrical work in Calvert County must meet the requirements of the 2011 National Electrical Code (NEC) and the Rules and Regulations of The State of Maryland Board of Electrical Examiners and Supervisors for Calvert County. 
  • Building permits for new work must be approved, paid for and issued prior to the submittal of electrical permit applications. 
  • The electrician MUST apply for and obtain electrical permit PRIOR to starting work. 
  • Incomplete or inaccurate applications will be rejected. 
  • Permits are NOT valid until an inspector has approved the application, payment has been received and the permit issued. 
  • Fines will be assessed for work performed before permit is obtained. 
  • All inspections must be called in by 3 p.m. for the following day. We do NOT do same day inspections. 
  • Inspectors are available most days from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. for questions and consultation. 
  • Low voltage inspections MUST be called in. Please note: If there are low voltage and primary voltage permits for the same job, all must be called in for inspection. The inspector has the right to hold folders until all permits have been scheduled.
  • It is ILLEGAL to “shop” your license to other persons.
  • There is a 24-hour waiting period on any reinspection.


  • Fees are to be paid at the time an application is submitted. The current fee schedule is available upon request.
  • Review and approval of applications requires at least 24 hours.
  • When requesting a work with, a meter number is required.


  • Engineered, signed and sealed electrical plans must accompany permit applications. Plans are for fee assessment only; all electrical work is subject to field inspection.
  • Permit applications must include documentation of compliance with Calvert County Zoning Ordinance 6-6.01 Outdoor Lighting Regulations, known as “Dark Sky Compliance.”
  • Fees are determined by the inspector at the time of approval.
