Meet the Economic Development Staff
Linda S. Vassallo
Linda S. Vassallo, director of economic development, holds a B.S. degree in mass communications from Towson State University. She was appointed director of Economic Development in 1999 and previously served as a marketing and communications specialist from 1996 to 1999. She has more than 28 years of experience in the fields of public relations, communications, marketing and business development. Prior to joining Calvert County Government, she served as a communications associate for USEC, public information specialist for SAIC, special projects analyst at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and intern staff to the National Republican Senatorial Committee on Capitol Hill.

Ms. Vassallo is past president of Leadership Southern Maryland. She is also a member of the Southern Maryland Economic Development Association and past chair; the Public Relations Society of America; the Maryland Association of Counties; the International Economic Development Council; and 2007 graduate of Leadership Maryland. She previously served as board member to the Maryland Economic Development Association (MEDA), is currently a member of the membership committee and was a member and previous chair of the MEDA awards committee.

Joyce Stinnett Baki
Joyce Stinnett Baki, tourism program specialist, has more than 30 years of tourism experience and attended Prince George’s Community College and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She is responsible for development and marketing the county’s dynamic tourism program and structuring programs and services that will attract visitors to the county. Prior to joining the Department of Economic Development, she served as sales director for Annapolis and Anne Arundel County CVB for five years and as director of sales for the National Aquarium in Baltimore for eight years. She has taught travel and tourism industry courses as an adjunct professor at the Community College of Baltimore County. In 2006, Ms. Baki was awarded Maryland Tourism Person of the Year at the Maryland Governor’s Conference on Tourism and Hospitality. In 2000 she received the Audrey Davenport Hospitality Person of the Year award at the same conference.

Ms. Baki is a member of the American Bus Association (ABA), Maryland Tourism Council (MTC), Mid-Atlantic Tourism Public Relations Alliance (MATPRA), Maryland Association of DMOs, Meeting Professionals International, Maryland Motorcoach Association (MMA), Pennsylvania Bus Association (PBA) and Virginia Bus Association. She serves on the board of the Southern Maryland Heritage Area Consortium (SMHAC) and on the Star-Spangled Banner Trail Advisory Council for the National Park Service. She is a 2011 graduate of Leadership Southern Maryland (LSM).

Danita Boonchaisri
Danita Boonchaisri, business development specialist, holds a B.S. in communications and an M.S. in business management from University of Maryland University College. She has 20 years of experience in the fields of marketing and communications and over 10 years of experience in economic development. Ms. Boonchaisri is responsible for managing the Calvert County Industrial Park and Patuxent Business Park. She is a business ombudsman for the county, a commercial site plan monitor on behalf of the business community and administrator of the Calvert Economic Development Loan Fund (CEDLF). Prior to joining the Department of Economic Development, she served as director of the Small Business Development Center, Southern Region, and the Entrepreneur and Leadership Center at the College of Southern Maryland. She also worked as a senior administrator and publication manager at the American Physical Society.

She is a member of the Maryland Economic Development Association (MEDA) and the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). She is also a 2008 graduate of Leadership Maryland.

Kelly Robertson-Slagle
Kelly Robertson-Slagle, business retention specialist, is responsible for promoting and facilitating the retention of small business and other economic enterprises in the county, visiting the local business community to assess business needs, monitor and document progress, and coordinate the provision of specific local state and federal resources where applicable.

Ms. Robertson-Slagle holds a B.S. degree in marketing from the University of Maryland. She has completed numerous continuing education courses through the International Economic Development Council. Prior to joining the department, Ms. Robertson-Slagle was director of the Maryland Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Southern Region. She also served as director of government/member relations with the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland and business development specialist with the Maryland Department of Business & Economic Development.

Ms. Robertson-Slagle has over 15 years of experience in business analysis, marketing, grant writing, program management and technical assistance. In addition, Ms. Robertson-Slagle has extensive experience in working with new and expanding businesses, cultivating relationships between counties and business community, economic development agencies, and state and regional agencies. She is a graduate and current board member of Leadership Southern Maryland. She is also a member of the Maryland Economic Development Association, the International Economic Development Council and Northeastern Economic Developers Association. She is a former executive board member of the Patuxent Partnership and the Southern Maryland Workforce Investment Board.

Mark Volland
Mark Volland, marketing and communications specialist, holds a B.A. in journalism and government from University of Maryland University College. He is responsible for marketing the county and providing information about county businesses, business services and government initiatives to the public and local, state and national media. Mr. Volland has more than 20 years of experience in journalism, publications, marketing and public relations.

Prior to joining the Department of Economic Development, he served as communications manager at the College of Southern Maryland and as communications specialist with Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative. He also worked as a reporter and editor with The Recorder newspaper. Mr. Volland is a member of the City-County Communications and Marketing AssociationPublic Relations Individuals in Southern Maryland (PRISM) and Public Information Leaders of Today (PILOT).

Angela Walters
Angela Walters, public information specialist, is responsible for delivering internal and external strategic communications and media relations that support Calvert County Government. She serves as a key team member in support of employee communications. She also assists as departmental liaison with external groups such as the media, business interests, community groups and the general public.

Ms. Walters holds a B.A. degree in communications from the American University. She has completed numerous continuing education courses in media relations, crisis communications and publication design. Prior to joining the department, Ms. Walters was the manager of strategic leadership support and site contract lead for OMNITEC Solutions, a defense contractor at NAS Patuxent River. In that role, Ms. Walters served as the lead speechwriter and supported all leadership communication efforts for the commander of the Naval Air Systems Command.

Ms. Walters began working in Calvert County in 1992 as editor of the Calvert Independent. She moved from there to the corporate communications staff at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, eventually becoming the supervisor of nuclear communication for the company’s nuclear fleet.

A 20-year resident of Calvert County, Ms. Walters has more than 25 years of communication experience. She also serves as the public affairs officer (volunteer) for the Maryland Fire and Rescue Services Memorial; director of communications (volunteer) for the Lucius Seneca Wellness Group (501.c); and is a member of the National Society of Professional Journalists. She is the former president of the board of directors for the Adult Day Care of Calvert County and former secretary of the Maryland Pro-Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
