CALVERT COUNTY HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION (HDC)
Now Available - "Adaptive Reuse of Tobacco Barns" Booklet - Tobacco barns in Southern Maryland are unique to our region and have a long history on our rural landscapes. The Southern Maryland Tobacco Consortium works to assist barn owners in finding ways to preserve tobacco barns and keep them in agricultural use so we do not lose them. Calvert County hosted an internship this summer, the product of which is this booklet, Adaptive Reuse of Tobacco Barns. We hope it is interesting and useful. If you have suggestions or comments, please email Kirsti Uunila, Historic Preservation Planner.

The Historic District Commission (HDC) serves as a citizen review board on matters concerning historic preservation within Calvert County. The seven members of the Historic District Commission, appointed by the Board of County Commissioners, have knowledge, training and special interest in historic preservation. Article 66B of the Annotated Code of Maryland establishes the authority of the HDC to function as both an advisory and decision-making body. In its advisory capacity, the HDC is required to make recommendations to the County Commissioners concerning the designation of sites as Historic Districts and applications for Calvert County tax credits for restoration work on structures in Historic Districts. In its decision-making capacity, the HDC reviews and approves petitions and building permits for alteration, repair, moving or demolition of structures and for ground-disturbing activities within designated Historic Districts. The HDC also reviews subdivision and site plan applications which may impact Historic Districts. It also makes recommendations on National Register nominations to the Maryland Historical Trust. Other duties of the HDC include safeguarding the heritage of the County by promoting preservation of historic structures and sites.
The seven-member HDC holds a regularly scheduled public meeting at 3:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month in the Courthouse Square Building at 205 Main Street, Prince Frederick.
