Scholarship Program
WHO IS AN ELIGIBLE VOLUNTEER:
At a minimum a certified Firefighter I or practicing Maryland EMT-B or a volunteer currently eligible for LOSAP may be eligible toparticipate in the scholarship program if they have completed two (2) years of active, certified service at the time of application. Active, certified service is defined as earning 144 points for each of the two previous years.
The point system requires 12 points each month as follows:
- 8 points for calls
- 3 points for collateral
- 1 point for a meeting or drill
- 4 points for collateral activities if no meetings or drills were held that month
The point system requires 144 for the year as follows:
- 96 points for calls
- 6 points for meetings
- 6 points for drills
- 36 points for collateral duties are determined by the department
Calvert Advance Life Support (CALS) members are eligible if they have completed two (2) years of active service at the time of application and if during those two years, they have provided 24 hours per month as a Paramedic in Charge (PMIC) for 12 consecutive months.
The Chief and the President of each volunteer department are required to certify by signing the application that the applicant has met the above eligibility criteria and may recommend funding amounts. Please note that 20 percent of the applications will be randomly selected for audit. The Chief and President will be required to provide documentation supporting their volunteer’s eligibility to participate in the program if his/her application is selected for audit.
WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS:
Applications are available on-line, at the station, or in the Recruitment and Retention Office. The scholarship program will fund the cost of tuition, books and fees for a post-high school program that is accredited. The volunteer is encouraged to complete and return a scholarship application by the stated deadline. The volunteer is also required to provide a copy of their most recent grade report with the application material if they have previously received a scholarship award. The application must include documentation that supports their requests such as course registration, tuition statements, enrollment information. Any expenses charged that are unrelated to tuition, books and fee expenses stated in the application will not be paid.
The applicant and the chief are requested to certify through the application process that he/she will not file for tuition reimbursement with the State of Maryland in the amount of the tuition scholarship awarded by the County. The applicant and the chief will also be requested to certify their cooperation with the Recruitment and Retention Committee in its completion of the State of Maryland application for reimbursement of the amount of the tuition scholarship awarded or reimbursement received by the applicant.
An application is required for each semester. See tuition deadlinesThe Recruitment and Retention Specialist will present to the Recruitment and Retention Committee information provided by the applicant and the Chief and President. The Recruitment and Retention Committee will review and approve the level of funding for each applicant.
