ADMINISTRATIVE & JUDICIAL SERVICES

 

The Administrative and Judicial Services Bureau is tasked with many duties – courthouse security, civil process, animal control, the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Training Academy, and the accreditation process. 

Civil Process Unit

All inquiries regarding civil matters are handled by this area of the Sheriff's Office. Questions include landlord/tenant cases, judgment enforcement, seizure of property, and domestic violence protection and peace orders.

The Civil Process Unit is responsible for the timely service of all civil actions received from courts throughout Maryland and nationwide.  Witness summons and subpoenas, civil complaints, various orders and writs are some of the types of process served by this section.

During 2008 the Civil Process Unit received 21,711 pieces of process for service.  This is an increase of 2% from 2007.  Personnel served 21,067 of these actions for a service rate of 97%.  The effective disposition of these cases also resulted in the collection of $80,083 in fees for these services.

The Sheriff's Office is OPEN 24 hours a day, allowing you two convenient ways to submit documentation and service fees: Personally or by mail.

Sheriff's Service Fee

The Sheriff's Office only serves court issued documents.

$40 for any case filed in Maryland.

$60 for any case filed outside of Maryland.

We do not charge for deputies summonsed to appear for criminal cases or domestic violence cases.

Landlord and Tenant Fee

$5 per tenant listed in a Failure to Pay Rent case.

$40 per Warrant of Restitution.

The Sheriff's Office only serves and executes landlord and tenant actions issued by the courts. If you have any questions regarding filing, please contact the District Court of Maryland for Calvert County at 443-550-6700.

The Sheriff’s Office only accepts the exact service amount by cash, money order or check, payable to: Calvert County Sheriff’s Office. For questions regarding sheriff’s service and fees, contact the Civil Process Unit at 410-535-2800.

Courthouse Security Unit

It is the duty of the Sheriff under common law to attend the courts and to provide for security of the Courthouse and courtrooms. The Court Security Unit is comprised of deputies who have all retired from other law enforcement agencies throughout the area.

The personnel assigned to this Unit provide the following services:

  • Maintain physical security for the Courthouse;

  • Provide protection for the Judges and the juries; and

  • Provide security and protection for employees and visitors

Animal Control Unit

The Animal Control Unit is staffed by five full-time Animal Control Officers, one Animal Control Officer Supervisor and one full-time Office Aide/Dispatcher. Animal Control Officers are tasked with enforcing County regulations as they pertain to dogs and cats as well as State laws regarding cruelty to animals. These officers conduct investigations to ensure pets are kept in a human manner, that they receive proper food, water, and shelter, and that they are not allowed to run at large in the community.

Accreditation

The Calvert County Sheriff's Office is seeking accreditation through the Commission on Law Enforcement Accreditation (CALEA). The Sheriff’s Office is currently in the Initial Self-Assessment Phase. In this phase, the agency assesses its policies, procedures, and practices to ensure that they are in compliance with all of CALEA’s 462 standards. The accreditation team anticipates a successful on-site assessment and receiving their accreditation award in the fall of 2010.

Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy

The Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Training Academy (SMCJTA) is a police and corrections training facility operated under the auspices of the Sheriff’s of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s Counties.

The Calvert County Sheriff's Office provides one full-time staff instructor and two full-time civilian support staff persons. The SMCJTA conducts entry-level police and corrections classes as well as in-service training for police and corrections.
