Meet the Assistant

Lt. Colonel Thomas C. Hejl
Assistant Sheriff
Lt. Colonel Tom Hejl brings 35 plus years of law enforcement experience to the Calvert County Sheriff's Office.
Lt. Colonel Hejl began his career with the Maryland State Police in 1971 and retired after 25 years in 1996 as a Lieutenant commanding the Technical Investigative Services Division of the Bureau of Drug Enforcement. During his tenure with the Maryland State Police Lt. Colonel Hejl spent twelve years assigned in Calvert County from 1974 to 1986. While assigned to the Prince Frederick Post he worked road patrol, was the county's first Resident Trooper, a criminal investigator and supervisor. In 1986 he was transferred to the Leonardtown Barrack in St. Mary's County to head their Criminal Investigation Section. In 1988 he was promoted and transferred to the Narcotics Division and was one of a handful of command personnel involved in the development of the Bureau of Drug Enforcement within the Maryland State Police. Lt. Colonel Hejl spent the remainder of his career in command positions within the Bureau of Drug Enforcement and also taught law enforcement related subjects throughout the country.
In 1996 retired Lieutenant Tom Hejl took a position as the Chief Operating Officer of Blackhawk Investigations, a security and investigative firm that handled cases and clients throughout Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Colombia.
In 1998 Tom left Blackhawk Investigations to accept a position as an investigator with the State's Attorney's Office in Calvert County and remained in that position until November of 2002 when he accepted the position of Assistant Sheriff under Sheriff Mike Evans.
Lt. Colonel Hejl has approximately twenty-six years of supervisory experience, twenty-four years of administrative and managerial experience and he continues to teach as well.
In his current position as Assistant Sheriff, Lt. Colonel Hejl oversees the entire Sheriff's Office operation, handles the budget for the Sheriff's Office, writes and manages grants and acts on behalf of the Sheriff in his absence. Lt. Colonel Hejl has written numerous law enforcement related articles and has been published in several law enforcement periodicals.
