Shop with a Cop is an annual event in December sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police of Calvert County, along with the Optimist Clubs of Calvert County. Members and staff of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office volunteer with the event along with members of the Maryland State Police and Natural Resources Police.The Shop with a Cop program joins underprivileged children with local police officers, providing the children with money to shop for Christmas presents for their families and themselves.
The event begins with the police officers picking up the children and transporting them to Outback Steakhouse in Prince Frederick where they are served with a morning snack. They are then escorted in marked police cruisers, complete with lights and sirens, to the Prince Frederick Wal-Mart.They travel down Main Street to the south entrance onto MD Rt. 2/4 and then north to Wal-Mart. Once at Wal-Mart, the children are allowed to purchase items for themselves and family members totaling $100 per child. After shopping, they are taken back to Outback Steakhouse for a breakfast buffet. While at Outback, volunteers assist the children with wrapping their presents before the officers transport them back to their homes.
